From Commerce Degree To Business Sales Career At Global Marketing Tech Company
How Yasser Ahmed found his dream sales career immediately after graduation.
The Challenge
After high school graduation in 2020, Yasser knew he wanted to pursue a career in the field of business but was confused on where to start.
The following year, he commenced his studies for a Bachelor of Commerce at Deakin University and picked up odd jobs in warehousing and car detailing.
In 2024, Yasser started working in the customer service call centre at NAB as his first grad role and quickly grew to love the role.
It was his first phone and KPI-based position and he loved working with business owners to solve their queries.
However, after a few months in the role, Yasser felt as though he wasn’t being fairly compensated for his effort and slowly began the search for other roles.
A potential career in business sales was recommended to him due to high upside in career progression and earnings potential.
Yasser was keeping an eye out to see what opportunities in the field were available before applying.
The Solution
Yasser learned about business sales by seeing other Earlywork fellows on Linkedin.
After attending an Earlywork Intro to Business Sales Careers webinar, he knew that business sales was for him.
His biggest reason?
There was more upside in developing his sales skills selling to other businesses over more consumer products such as insurance and real estate.
Here’s more context.
In Australia, entry level business sales roles earn an average of $95k per year*.
Within 4-5 years of starting in business sales, you could be selling to 1000+ employee companies and have a total package north of $250k+ per year.
But why are packages in business sales so high?
It all comes down to what you’re selling - business-to-business software tools (ie: UberEats).
Sales is the second most in-demand role for most companies with clients that are businesses (behind product specialists) as reps are responsible for finding new business customers to adopt their tools.
Yet, there’s a distinct skill shortage as many job seekers think they require a business background or previous sales experience to get started - which simply isn’t true.
The Results
After attending a Business Sales Group Interview, Yasser was shortlisted for his engagement with the session activities.
Yasser was introduced to Podium, a global marketing tech company that was part of our Employer Network and started his business sales career.
